When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and I could say, "I used everything you gave me." - Emma Bombeck
In loving memory of our founder, Vernon Smith, most knew him as "Cornbread", but all the employees called him "Grandpa".
Vernon B. Smith grew up in and around Hazard, KY. He was one of nine children. Vernon had to learn, at an early age, to be an entrepreneur, and how to be successful at whatever he did. He always knew what he wanted out of life and how to go about getting it. He was strong willed, intelligent, and cut right to the chase, whether you liked it or not.
In 1994, Vernon opened the first tire shop in a small garage at his home. He named the shop Cornbread's Corner (the name of the shop came from his nickname that many knew him by). He worked for Cummins for 25 years at the time. This small tire shop was opened as an extra means of income for his fast approaching retirement.
In 1998, Vernon's grandson, Brad Smith, started helping him at the shop on weekends. Brad was 14 at the time, and helped his papaw for extra money. Brad caught on quickly to the tire business.
In 2005, Vernon turned the business over to Brad. Brad went on to open a bigger shop, still located on the family property. The business was in full swing and growing every day.
In 2011, a second tire shop was opened in Seymour at 101 Laurel St.
In November of 2018, the Seymour shop moved to a bigger building to accommodate the growth. The Seymour shop is now located at 101 South St.
